The Leus Family Foundation gives life support to St George’s Hospital Charity
The Leus Foundation and St George’s Hospital Charity continue to have a hugely important relationship, resulting in thousands of children being helped every year across the Trust since 2018.
Founder Dmitry Leus was introduced to the Charity after learning of 14 year old Megan, a patient at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, with blood cancer. Dmitry says: “Megan is a fearless girl, she wanted to live, she wanted to be with her family, she wanted to live without pain.”
In awe of her bravery Dmitry asked how he could help to which Megan replied: “Let’s help St George’s hospital and help the children.” This is exactly what he and The Foundation did.
Initially The Foundation helped by providing a large number of “Buzzies” – a child friendly pain distraction device which makes blood tests and injection procedures much quicker and less traumatic for younger patients.
The Leus Foundation have also pledged their support in overhauling the children’s Serenity Garden at St George’s Hospital. The Garden has been given lots of love and attention to make it safe for children to access whilst stimulating their senses and encouraging calm and recovery after operations. The newly designed and decorated Garden uses a mix of materials, colours, plants, flowers and play equipment to ensure there is something to interest every child, whilst they can enjoy the fresh air themselves or with their loved ones.
Recently St George’s Hospital Charity and The Leus Foundation hosted a fundraising Children’s Appeal at the House of Commons in London. The charity’s goal is to raise £1.3m towards refurbishing the children’s wards, creating bright and modern spaces that reflect the exceptional care offered by the staff. Gemma Phillips, General Manager of Children’s Medicine at St George’s Hospital, says: “A modern environment would go a long way towards keeping our young patient’s spirits up, particularly for those who need to be with us for a long time or have disabilities and complex needs.”
The Leus Foundation is honoured to continue their support with such a wonderful Hospital charity and is looking forward to officially opening the Serenity Garden next month.
